Yesterday while wrestling with my two year old, he stops to wonder why I had skin on my lips. It must have been a moment of discovery or that he was intrigued, but he could understand why the texture of my lips were different from his. So he came up with a solution and told me to simply lick my lips. I don’t know if he knows that would make things worse, but he didn’t care. It was an immediate solution to the problem and if it works, why not?

Sometimes the simplest solution may be the best one.

Things My Two Year Old Says: Doctor Visit March 13, 2012

Hassan hates going to the doctor. When he started to walk, I would literally have to pry him off the door of the doctor’s office to get him in for a check up. We are expecting baby number two and last Friday was the big gender revealing ultrasound. Hassan came with us as we could not find someone to watch him. As I sat on the table waiting for my doctor to show up, he insisted that he sat next to me. Not a good move because Hassan loves to make noises out of the paper roll that keeps the table sanitary. Finally, he calms down and looks at me. As he pats my shoulder he said, “Don’t be scared. I am here with you.” As I wasn’t scared, maybe nervous with the gender reveal, I found his presence to be comforting. Something about a two year old and his logic makes me wonder if I over look things sometimes. His simplicity or sophisticated thinking just really makes the world better.

By the way, we’re having a boy. Soon, I’ll be sharing what baby number 2 has to say.

Things My Two Year Old Says: Don’t Shout. March 7, 2012

My family love sports. We love it so much that our walls are filled with jerseys and sport items. We’re from LA where our home team is our pride. We love the Lakers. There are no doubts. We watch the game with alot of passion. Last night the Lakers played against the Pistons and the game went into overtime. As I cheered on Kobe to make the shot to take us to a win, Kobe’s shot does not make it. I screamed at the top of my lungs “WHAT WAS THAT SHOT?” Sports make me emotional. Hassan comes up to my face and says “Don’t shout.” I secretly think he is a Celtics fan. Every time we yell about the Celtics, he turns the TV off. He must thinks his parents are very crazy people.

Things My Two Year Old Says: First Hair Cut March 6, 2012

Every now and then I like to go over videos and photos of Hassan. It reminds me of how small he was and how precious he is. We came upon a video of his first haircut. My father in law shot the video of an 18 months Hassan getting his first hair cut. The movie is about 10 minutes long and Hassan is crying the entire time.  I’m telling him that I don’t know why he would cry as a haircut is nice for him. He looks at me as he shakes his head and with the most sincere, matter of fact voice, he says “Poor baby Hassan.” And I tell him, “Poor baby Hassan? More like poor Robin ( the person cutting his hair), Daddy and Grandpa!” Hassan just laughs. I hope life never jades my baby.

Things My Two Year Old Says – Airplane Rides March 1, 2012

I always underestimate the knowledge and memory my two year old because I have a hard time remembering a lot of things. Plus there are many things I don’t find as important or take for granted, but for my two year old it means the world. Yesterday, I asked Hassan if he would like to go on an airplane. In his short little life, he’s been on an airplane about once every six months. Considering his first plane trip was when he was 10 months old, I did not think he would remember too much of it. Hassan was very excited to hear that he would be going on a plane ride soon. We do an annual trip to Las Vegas in the Spring for his dad’s business. It’s a short 45 minute flight. I asked him what would we do on an airplane. He replied, “I go on a stair. Relax. A lady brings me water and cookie. I eat the cookie. I poo and no making noise.” I had to laugh so hard because that is exactly how a plane ride for Hassan would go. Although, he does not have a bowel movement just for eating cookies. It’s his idea for cause and effect when he eats.

This really reminded me of how I take too many things for granted. Living life through the eyes of a two year old is like living all over again.

Hassan has a great love for food. It’s been that way since he was in the womb. Hence why I gained 50 lbs when pregnant with him. Now that he’s two, he’s established the food that he really loves and those that he doesn’t. Recently he asked his dad if he can have some chocolate. Hassan doesn’t just eat chocolate, he eats dark chocolate from Lindt or some pricier brand. He doesn’t do Hershey’s. But on this occasion, he had eaten one too many chocolate for the day. So his dad suggested that he go eat some strawberries or grapes (other food he also loves). Hassan reluctantly agreed. So as I walked him downstairs and we nearly reached the bottom, he looks up at me with his big brown eyes and softly whispers, “Mommy, I can’t wait till Halloween. I can get all the candies I want.” My reaction was “Halloween is a very long time from now and you really don’t need any more candy.”

Trust me, he’s always jumping up and down without candy. Can you imagine him with candy? Oh dear…

Things My Two Year Old Says February 17, 2012

Since my two year old, Hassan, is a great source of entertainment, I have decided to start blogging about the things he says. I don’t know where he gets his humor from ( I suspect his father), but the things that comes out of his mouth some times (most times) leaves me speechless. So here is to the first post for things my two year old says.

As I lay in bed in and out of consciousness (I am pregnant with my second and not just a lazy mother), the room got too quiet especially with a two year old. I gathered up all the energy I had left (trust me, there’s not much of that these days) and asked “Hassan, what are you doing?” He replies, “I’m exercising by moving my hands around.”

My thought “Lord Jesus, if you’re calling that exercising, what do you call the other movements you do?”
