Tips and Advices about Before, During and After Pregnancy

Stretch Marks March 31, 2010

Stretch marks often come with pregnancy. Your skin is stretching and when it stretches too much and too fast, you get stretch marks. I gained 50 lbs with my son, but I did not get one single stretch mark. Call it luck or good genetics, but it was neither of the two. My secret to not getting stretch marks will pregnant…. OLIVE OIL. Yes, I said olive oil. Yes, it is the same oil you cook with. And Yes, it is the same oil you dip your bread in. I tried all the cocoa butter and cream while pregnant, but nothing could stop the itch of my growing belly. One day while fighting the itchy urge, a friend of mine who was much wiser told me to put on some olive oil. Sure enough, when I got home that day I rushed to my kitchen and grabbed the bottle under the sink. I had immediate itch relief. It was better than any lotion or cream I had ever brought while pregnant. Since then, I’ve put it on each day and night while pregnant. Well, I made it out without a single mark and let me remind you. I gained 50 lbs. My mother had tons of marks and was never too shy to show me. So you can’t tell me it is genetics.

Olive oil is natural. It is good for the heart and a great prevention for colon cancer. It can also lower blood pressure. So if you’re expecting and looking for a remedy that works for stretch marks, I highly suggest olive oil.

But don’t just take my word for it.

Hypnobirthing vs. Hypnobabies March 22, 2010

When I found out I was going to be a mom, I wanted to bring my son into this world with alot of love and peace. I wanted the best for him. Growing up, my mom was never shy of sharing my birthing story with me. It is the typical I was in pain for 3 days story that we see and hear all the time on TV and in movies. I had other ideas about what birthing should be like since both my grandmothers had 10 kids each. My dad’s mom had him in the rice paddy and quickly return to work after she gave birth. When I heard that story, I knew I had to research and find a better way to give birth. While doing my research I found Hypnobirthing and Hypnobabies. I did a Hypnobirthing class and the home study course for Hypnobabies. I wanted to be prepare. However, when my labor started I ended up using Hypnobabies and it was a success.

Because my physical movement was restricted when I was pregnant, I saw that the childbirthing method that I was chose was like mentally training me for birth. Instead of preparing for a marathon, I was preparing for birth. Mentally training yourself to think something positive when all you heard is negative is tough. You constantly have to fight off the people that will tell you that there is no such thing as a painless birth. I guess the similarity between the two courses is that it teaches that birthing can be comfortable and that each contraction (or birthing wave) lasts for about 60 seconds of which YOU can be in control. Fear is the main reason for pain during labor. If you release that fear and believe that your body knows what it is doing, you will have a comfortable birth.

I found the Hypnobirthing course too focused on the history of how Marie Morgan, the founder, got the idea. There are about two different scripts on one CD. And that was probably my only problem with the program. I wanted more practice. I wanted to do more than listen to two script. I did my research and found Hypnobabies.

Hypnobabies is a six week course. During this time, you learn how to put yourself into a hypnotic state and how to do it with your eyes open. It also gives you a meal plan where protein and sodium is very important to a pregnant woman’s diet. Yes, I said sodium. Of course like any childbirthing method, it gives you the different phases of labor. I also liked that it gave me an exercise plan to help relieve the pressure off your hip. Since your baby is resting on your hip, doing the exercises really gives you relief from it. One of my favorite was sitting on a birthing ball (or a regular exercise ball). It relieved the pressure off my tailbone. However, the best part of the program was that there were many different scripts. You alternate between the Deepening script and another script each week. I really felt like I was training myself for a mental marathon. I felt prepared. When I went into labor, I was very in control with each contractions getting more intense. Because I was so relaxed and in control, I was only in active labor for 4 hours. I never felt the crowning (or burning sensation). It was just so comfortable. I’m going to save my birthing story for another post. But for more information you can visit their homepage.

Losing the Baby Weight March 18, 2010

Recently I was at a charity function where some people have not seen me since I had my son. Of course some people were unaware that I had a baby and those who knew wondered where did the baby weight go. I am 4’11. When I found out I was pregnant, I was in the best shape of my life. I was training five days a week with Jillian Michaels and eating an extremely clean and healthy diet. I was so excited when I found out I was pregnant. I could not wait to have that cute baby bump. Only I never was the cute pregnant lady. I gained 50 lbs and could not wait to just have my son. Gaining the weight was hard. Even though I ate as healthy as I could, I could not escape the weight gain. It was probably the only pregnancy symptom that I had. So how did I lose that 50 lb and gained my size 2 back? Here is how I did it.

1) Breastfeeding – Breastfeeding is probably the best and most natural way to lose the weight. It is good for mothers and babies. Breastfeeding burns about 500 calories a day. That’s right…. I said 500 Calories A DAY. I probably ate more breastfeeding than when I was pregnant. And the weight came off! One of the many benefits of breastfeeding include a lower risk for ovarian cancer for mothers and babies are less likely to get sick. Hassan had the swine flu when he was 5 months. Because he was breastfed, he was able to get over it within 3 days.

2) Belly Bandit – Once you deliver, your skin will not just bounce back. Think of a rubber band that has been stretch. It is alot looser than when it wasn’t stretched. I suggest getting the Belly Bandit to help pull your skin back. I brought two sizes of the Belly Bandit (one medium and one small). It quickly brought my abs back in 6 weeks. I went back to work when Hassan turned 6 weeks. The head of the company told me that I didn’t even look like I had a baby. I didn’t exercise at all during the 6 weeks. The only thing I did was put the Belly Bandit on within 24 hours of giving birth and I wore it for 6 weeks straight.

3) Exercise – Of course losing weight is going to require some work. It’s hard to find time to shower let alone find time to exercise. Since I am a huge fan of Jillian Michaels, I started to use her 30 Day Shred. This was the DVD I used when I couldn’t get to the gym, but wanted a work out. It is intense and the best part about it is that it is only 25 min. Because you need to switch your work out up to keep your body guessing, I also do Yoga Meltdown with Jillian Michaels. It is also only 25 min. My other favorite workout is Tracey Anderson’s Post Natal workout. This one is a bit longer at 50 min, but you will get your abs back. She has really help sculpt my abs back. And every once in a while I’ll squeeze in some Pilates. Of course, that is also another 20 min. You don’t need to work out for hours, but you need to work out smart. All of the work outs I’ve mention are really helpful in getting your body back.

Other than the 3 things I mention above, I didn’t do anything else to lose the weight. I work full time so it leaves me with very little time for myself. But I’ve found these things to be the most effective in gaining my body back.

But don’t just take my word for it.

A New Blog. March 17, 2010

A friend of suggested that I start a new blog on what I love to talk about most…Baby. But not just about baby…everything from getting pregnant, being pregnant, giving birth and of course after baby comes. I never thought I’d be so interested in this subject, but my road to becoming a mother wasn’t easy. My doctor wasn’t so sure I’d ever get this far, but we took a chance and had a huge amount of faith. Three years later, I am a first time mom to a very beautiful ten months old baby name Hassan. I’m the kind of person that likes to read and research. So I spent a great amount of time researching while I was pregnant on all kinds of thing related to mothers and babies. Lately, I’ve noticed that a lot of my friends are having or trying to have kids of their own and are always asking me for advice. The information that I share are what I have found to be useful after weighing the pros and cons. These are the same information I share with the people around. Hopefully you’ll find the information useful whether you are trying, going to or already have kids.

But don’t just take my word for it.
